Baskonia-Deportivo Alavés Football Boarding School Program

The official Baskonia-Deportivo Alavés Academy Football Boarding School Program

Train within the Deportivo Alavés (La Liga) and Baskonia (EuroLeague) professional structure in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain — combining high-performance football with accredited academic education in a modern full-board residence.

Baskonia Alavés Football Boarding School — Program Overview

The Baskonia Alavés football boarding school program gives young players direct access to the training environment of Deportivo Alavés — a club that competes in La Liga, Spain’s top professional division. The program is promoted by the Baskonia-Alavés Group, an entity that manages two professional clubs simultaneously: Deportivo Alavés in football and Baskonia in basketball’s ACB and EuroLeague. Based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, players train each morning under the head coach of the Deportivo Alavés U16 academy team — the same coaching staff that work within the professional club’s own youth structure — and in the afternoons with a second coach trained in the Deportivo Alavés methodology. Beyond the program sessions, players are placed into CD Aurrerá de Vitoria, a local partner club with multiple teams per age group, allowing each player to compete at a level that matches their current ability. For a young player seeking genuine immersion in a professional football environment, this means coaching staff, training grounds, and competitive match environments that operate within the highest level of Spanish football.

Academic education is a stated core pillar of the program and is delivered primarily through AESA Prep — a fully online American preparatory school system in which all lessons are taught in English. This means international players can continue their high-school education without interruption, regardless of their Spanish language level. For players aged 18 and over, a university option is available. French-speaking players may also choose to study in French, or can bring their own curriculum from their home country and follow it online from the residence. Education costs are billed separately from the program fee and are not included in the prices listed on this page.

Who Is This Program For?

The Baskonia Alavés Academy targets young football players of international profile who want to develop within a genuine La Liga professional structure. The program is open to all competitive levels — there is no minimum standard required to join. Players are assessed on arrival and placed into the appropriate team within CD Aurrerá de Vitoria, the local partner club, which fields multiple teams per age category (for example, three teams at the cadete U16 level) under different names and logos so that players of different levels can compete in the same league without facing each other. Both male and female players are shown in the 2026–2027 program materials.

This program suits families whose primary goal is elite football development within a professional Spanish club environment, with academic continuity maintained in parallel. The 10-month season option provides the deepest immersion in the Deportivo Alavés methodology and gives players the opportunity to obtain a local football licence and compete in official Spanish youth leagues. Shorter options from 1 week to 6 months allow families to trial the environment before committing to a full season, with friendly matches organised during any period when an official licence is still being processed. The family commitment includes covering international flights, visa costs, and education fees separately from the program price. The program does not act as an agent — it does not promise professional contracts, scout placements, or direct pathways into the Deportivo Alavés youth system. What it offers is high-quality training within a professional structure, competitive match experience, and full academic continuity in English.

This program would not suit a player or family looking for a guaranteed trial with Deportivo Alavés first team or youth squads — the academy is a training and development environment, not a direct recruitment pipeline into the professional club’s own structure. It also would not suit a family expecting the program to act as a bridge to US college soccer — the program provides training reports and match footage that can support a college application, but Deportivo Alavés is not in contact with NCAA programs and does not provide direct introductions to colleges. Players who need a fully school-accredited in-person classroom environment should note that all academic study here is conducted online.

The Football Training Program

About Deportivo Alavés and the Baskonia-Alavés Group

Deportivo Alavés is a professional football club based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, in the Basque Country of northern Spain, currently competing in La Liga — the highest division of Spanish football. The club is managed by the Baskonia-Alavés Group, a multi-sport entity that also manages Baskonia, one of Europe’s leading basketball clubs competing in both the ACB (the Spanish top division) and the EuroLeague. This dual-sport professional infrastructure gives the academy a breadth of professional sporting culture that few programs in Europe can match. Players in the Baskonia Alavés Academy train at facilities used within the Deportivo Alavés sports structure, under staff from that same organisation. Weekend activities include live match attendance at both Deportivo Alavés games at Mendizorrotza stadium (La Liga and Copa del Rey) and Baskonia games at Buesa Arena (ACB and EuroLeague) — an environment where elite performance is visible and tangible throughout the week. For Oxasport families, this partnership means access to a structured, professional, and internationally recognised football institution in Spain.

Training Methodology

The training methodology at the Baskonia Alavés football boarding school program is built directly on the high-performance model of Deportivo Alavés. Each session addresses technical, tactical, and physical elements, and training is adapted to the individual progression of each player — rather than a one-size-fits-all collective approach. The head coach of the program is the current official coach of the Deportivo Alavés U16 academy team, bringing the same standards applied inside the professional club’s youth structure directly into the academy sessions. Morning sessions (9:30–11:00) are led by this head coach.

Afternoon training is conducted by a second coach who is trained in the Deportivo Alavés methodology and also attends local club sessions at CD Aurrerá de Vitoria to film footage for video analysis and monitor players’ match performances. The first week of the program is structured as a settling-in phase: morning sessions with Deportivo Alavés staff, and afternoon sessions either at the local club or with the second coach. This dual structure — individual technical development in the morning under La Liga-affiliated coaching, combined with competitive local club football in the afternoons — reflects how modern professional clubs develop players at every stage of their pathway.

Coaching Staff and Credentials

The head coach of the Baskonia Alavés Academy is the current official coach of the Deportivo Alavés U16 academy team — a position within the professional club’s own youth structure. This coach leads morning sessions (9:30–11:00) and is available exclusively for those sessions, as they coach the Deportivo Alavés academy team in the evenings. Afternoon training and match monitoring are handled by a second coach, who is trained in the Deportivo Alavés methodology, attends CD Aurrerá de Vitoria sessions alongside academy players, and collects video footage for analysis. Physical conditioning is led by specific coaches of the club, and physiotherapy is included in the program.

Weekly Training Schedule Example

Training runs across five days per week, Monday through Friday. Morning sessions with Deportivo Alavés staff run daily from 9:30 to 11:00. Three afternoons per week include team training sessions with the second coach or at CD Aurrerá de Vitoria’s local club facilities; the remaining two afternoons are free, providing dedicated study time. Weekends are reserved for attending Deportivo Alavés and Baskonia matches — giving players regular exposure to professional competition as observers. Players registered with CD Aurrerá de Vitoria also play matches with their local team at weekends, depending on the fixture schedule and licence status.

Player Development and Progress Tracking

The program includes formal Sports Progress Reports and Physical Tests as deliverables provided to every player. A personalised follow-up is included for each player throughout their stay. The second coach attends all CD Aurrerá de Vitoria sessions and matches alongside academy players, collecting video footage for analysis and monitoring individual performance in competitive match settings. This means player assessment is not limited to closed training — it extends into official and friendly competitive match environments.

  • Formal Sports Progress Reports included in the program fee
  • Physical tests conducted during the program
  • Personalised follow-up for each player throughout the stay
  • Second coach attends all CD Aurrerá de Vitoria sessions and matches for video analysis
  • Regular monitoring of physical, technical, and academic progress

Matches and Tournament Calendar

Players in the Baskonia Alavés Academy have two distinct types of competitive match exposure. First, all players attend Deportivo Alavés home matches at Mendizorrotza (La Liga and Copa del Rey), Baskonia games at Buesa Arena (ACB and EuroLeague), and Deportivo Alavés youth matches at Ibaia — these are included in the program fee as spectating and learning experiences. Second, players are registered with CD Aurrerá de Vitoria, the local partner club, which fields multiple teams per age group at different competitive levels. Players are placed in the team that matches their ability and compete in official Spanish youth league matches once their licence is approved. During the period before a licence is granted, friendly matches are organised to keep players in competitive action. For programs under 6 months, an official licence cannot be obtained and all matches during that period are friendlies. For programs of 6 months or longer, players can obtain a local licence and play in official league matches; the licence process typically takes around 2 months, during which friendlies are arranged. Timeline varies depending on whether the player is EU or non-EU, and on the player’s age — players under 16 require additional documentation, which can extend processing time.

Physical Conditioning and Sports Science

The weekly schedule includes dedicated gym sessions on Tuesday and Friday mornings, providing strength and conditioning work twice per week alongside the football-specific training load. Physical conditioning sessions are led by specific coaches of the club and are included in the program fee. Physiotherapy is also included in the program. The entire training campus — football pitches, gym, swimming pool, padel courts, and basketball stadium — is located on the same site as Ondare Residencia, meaning players make no daily transfers between accommodation and training. This on-site integration between living, training, and recovery reflects the standards of a professional athlete environment. Meals at the residence are prepared following nutritionist guidelines specifically for athletes

Boarding School Academics

Academic education is a stated core pillar of the Baskonia Alavés Academy program. For players under 18, the default academic pathway is AESA Prep — a fully online American preparatory school system taught entirely in English. This means international players can continue their high school studies without losing academic credit, regardless of their Spanish language level, and without needing to attend a physical school. The flexible online format is specifically designed to work around the academy’s daily training schedule.

AESA Prep International

School name: AESA Prep (American Online Preparatory School)

School location: Fully online — accessible from Ondare Residencia. No physical school commute required.

For players under 18, the primary academic program is AESA Prep — an American online preparatory school in which all lessons are delivered in English. The online-only format means there is no commute to a physical school, and the timetable can be built around the academy’s training schedule. Not every player in the program is required to follow AESA Prep — those who already have an online school system from their home country can continue with that instead. French-speaking players have the option to study in French within the AESA Prep system, or to bring their own French-language curriculum. For players aged 18 and over, a university-level option exists. Education costs for AESA Prep are billed separately from the program fee.

Academic Qualifications Available

American High School Diploma

The main academic pathway for players under 18 is AESA Prep, an American online preparatory school system. All lessons are taught in English and completed remotely from the residence, with tutors available on-site at Ondare Residencia to provide support during study time. The American high school format is internationally recognised and is the system that the two American players who completed the program in the previous season used before proceeding to the NCAA college application process.

Own Home Curriculum (Flexible Option)

Players who already follow an online school program from their home country are not required to switch to AESA Prep. The program accommodates students continuing with their existing curriculum online from their residence.

NCAA Alignment and US College Pathway

The Baskonia Alavés Academy does not act as an agent for NCAA college placements and does not have direct contact with US college programs. However, the program does support the college application process in a practical way: the academy provides training reports, match footage, and any other documentation that can help a player present their athletic profile to NCAA programs. Two American players completed the program in the previous season — both used their time at the academy to finish high school via AESA Prep and to build their playing profile before pursuing NCAA college placements through their own agents. Players seeking a US college soccer pathway through this program should expect to manage their NCAA application independently or through their own agent, using the training reports and match footage provided by the academy as supporting material. Oxasport can advise on how to position this experience for the college application process.

Language of Instruction

The primary language of academic instruction is English — all AESA Prep lessons are taught in English, and this is the default for the majority of international players in the program. A French-language option is available within the AESA Prep system for French-speaking players, and players may also bring their own home-country curriculum in any language. Spanish and French are therefore possible but are secondary to English as the academic delivery language. Players do not need to speak Spanish to maintain academic continuity during the program.

A Typical Academic Day

AESA Prep lessons are completed online from Ondare Residencia. Morning training runs from 9:30 to 11:00, after which players return to the residence for study time and lunch. Tutors are available on-site at the residence during study periods. Afternoon training sessions start at 17:00 or 18:00. Study time is therefore distributed across the middle of the day (post-morning training) and the evenings (after dinner). On the three days per week where there is no afternoon training session, players have an extended block of free and study time in the afternoon. Not every player follows the AESA Prep curriculum — some continue with their own online school from home — but the daily rhythm of study is the same regardless of which system they use.

Campus Residence and Facilities

Players in the Baskonia Alavés football boarding school program live at Ondare Residencia — a modern, purpose-built student residence in Vitoria-Gasteiz that provides full board accommodation, study facilities, and recreational spaces designed to support the daily rhythm of a student-athlete.

The Student Residence

Residence name: Ondare Residencia

Location: Maite Zuñiga Kalea, 12, 01007 Vitoria-Gasteiz, Araba, Spain.

Managed by: Ondare Residencia operates independently.

Ondare Residencia is a modern space designed to let students study, live, and train in the same environment. It is a place where studying, living, and leisure coexist in perfect harmony. For a teenager living away from home for the first time, the residence provides the structure of a managed environment — full board meals, cleaning services, and shared common areas — while remaining a living space rather than a dormitory. The residence is a well-equipped facility with purpose-designed study areas, recreational lounges, and gym spaces.

Accommodation and Room Details

The Ondare Residencia provides double rooms — rooms designed for two occupants. Full board is included, meaning meals are provided at the residence throughout the program. Laundry service and cleaning service are listed as included elements. The residence includes a dedicated study room and a TV room, providing separate spaces for academic work and leisure. High-speed WiFi is included.

  • Dedicated study room
  • TV room / lounge area
  • Recreational common area

Meals and Nutritional Support

All three daily meals — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — are provided at Ondare Residencia and are included in the program fee. Meals are prepared by the residence kitchen following nutritionist guidelines specifically designed for athletes. The program expects all players to eat at the residence for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; this is not simply a convenience — it is part of the athletic support model that ensures players are fuelled correctly around training. Players who eat outside the residence do so at their own expense and outside the nutritionist-guided structure. The same kitchen serves the professional Deportivo Alavés and Baskonia players living in the residence, meaning the nutritional standards applied are those of a professional sports environment.

Supervision, Welfare and Medical Support

Ondare Residencia provides 24-hour coverage. A designated person of the academy residence acts as the family’s point of contact and welfare lead during the player’s stay. Health insurance is included in the program fee for all players.

  • 24-hour coverage at Ondare Residencia
  • Designated academy residence contact person — family’s named point of contact during the program
  • Health insurance included in the program fee
  • On-site tutors available during study periods

Payment Structure

An instalment option is available. The specific payment schedule and deposit amount are confirmed by the club during the admissions process. Oxasport will advise families on payment terms at the point of enquiry. There is no fixed deadline for applications — places are allocated on a rolling basis. As preparing documents typically takes several months, families are encouraged to start the process as early as possible to maximise availability.

Passport and Eligibility Requirements

Players train with a local Spanish club (CD Aurrerá de Vitoria), which means they can obtain a local youth football licence regardless of nationality. For programs under 6 months, no official licence is issued, and all matches are friendlies. For programs of 6 months or longer, the licence application process begins on arrival; it typically takes around 2 months and may take longer for non-EU players or players under 16, who require additional documentation. Oxasport will review each player’s specific situation at the enquiry stage and advise on expected licence timelines before any commitment is made.

What Families Ask Us Most Often

Families researching this program most often ask three things. First, whether the La Liga connection is genuine — the answer is yes: coaching staff are drawn from the Deportivo Alavés sports structure, and players train at facilities used by the professional club. Second, whether academic continuity is maintained — it is: the academy partners with three educational institutions in Vitoria-Gasteiz, though families should confirm which academic track fits their child’s specific situation before enrolling. Third, whether the shorter program durations (1 week to 3 months) are worthwhile — for families uncertain about committing to a full season, shorter stays can serve as a genuine evaluation period for both the player and the family.

Results and Outcomes

The program does not promise professional contracts, scout placements, or direct pathways into the Deportivo Alavés youth system. What it does provide is high-quality training within a La Liga professional structure, competitive match experience at local Spanish youth level, full academic continuity in English, and the documentation — training reports, physical test results, and match footage — that players need to pursue the next step in their development independently. In the previous season, the program hosted two American players who used their time at the academy to complete their high school qualification via AESA Prep and build their playing profile before pursuing NCAA college placements. An 18-year-old player from Al Ahly (Egypt) also participated, competing against teams across the Basque Country. The academy provided the training environment and documentation; next steps were managed by each player and their own agents.

About the City

Living in Vitoria-Gasteiz

Vitoria-Gasteiz is the home of Deportivo Alavés, one of the Basque Country’s established professional clubs and a current La Liga side. The Mendizorrotza stadium is the club’s home ground, and the venue where academy players in this program attend La Liga and Copa del Rey matches as part of their weekly schedule. The Basque Country has one of the strongest regional football cultures in Europe — a region that has produced consistent La Liga clubs and professional players for decades. Beyond football, Vitoria-Gasteiz is also the home of Baskonia, one of Europe’s leading basketball clubs, meaning the professional sporting culture of the city extends well beyond one discipline. For a young player, living in a city where professional sport is a visible and accessible part of everyday life provides a motivational context that few training environments can replicate.

Getting There and Getting Around

Transport to and from Bilbao Airport (BIO) is included in the program fee on arrival and departure. Bilbao Airport serves direct connections from major European cities. Within Vitoria-Gasteiz, players make virtually no independent travel — all training, meals, study, and recovery happen on the campus at Ondare Residencia. The only regular off-campus transfer is to Mendizorrotza stadium for Deportivo Alavés home matches, a 15–20 minute journey that is organised by the residence.

Approaching the academy directly is possible, but working through Oxasport means you have a dedicated advisor who knows the program, has direct lines to the academy coordinators, and can prepare your application correctly the first time. We assess your child’s profile honestly before you apply, manage all documentation, handle communication with the club in Spanish where needed, and remain your contact throughout the program. We work with families from across Europe and beyond, and we understand the questions that matter most: eligibility, visa requirements, academic continuity, welfare arrangements, and what happens after the program ends. Compare This Program

Most families researching the Baskonia Alavés Academy are also looking at one or two other programs — which is the right approach. The decision depends on factors that vary by family: the player’s age, the academic qualification required, the preferred country, budget, and how important La Liga-level professional immersion is versus other differentiators. The guides below can help you make a structured comparison rather than relying on brochure language alone.

Baskonia Alavés Football Boarding School — Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

If you have any questions regarding the Baskonia Alavés Academy, contact the Oxasport team directly — we respond to every enquiry within 24 hours.

What is the deadline to apply for the program?

There is no fixed deadline. Places are allocated on a rolling basis. However, preparing the required documents typically takes several months, so families are strongly encouraged to start the process as early as possible to maximise the chance of securing a place for their preferred program duration and start date. Contact Oxasport to check current availability.

Do I need a European passport to join this program?

Non-EU players can join the program. Because players train and compete with a local Spanish partner club (CD Aurrerá de Vitoria) rather than joining a professional academy, the standard FIFA Article 19 restrictions on international transfers of minors do not apply in the same way. For programs of 6 months or longer, the process to obtain a local youth football licence begins on arrival. EU players and players aged 16 and over typically receive licences more quickly. Players under 16 and non-EU players may require additional documentation, which can extend the timeline. Oxasport will review your child’s specific situation at the enquiry stage.

What does the program fee include?

The program fee (inclusive of VAT) covers: full-board accommodation at Ondare Residencia, access to all on-site facilities (gym, swimming pool, padel, football pitches, basketball stadium), daily morning training sessions with Deportivo Alavés coaching staff, three team training sessions per week, physiotherapy, physical conditioning sessions, personalised follow-up, video analysis collection at local club sessions, transport to and from Bilbao Airport on arrival and departure, official Deportivo Alavés training kit, Sports Progress Reports, physical tests, health insurance, match tickets for Deportivo Alavés (La Liga and Copa del Rey) and Baskonia (ACB and EuroLeague), attendance at Deportivo Alavés youth matches, on-site tutors during study periods, and 24-hour residence coverage. Academic education is billed separately.

Does the fee cover international flights and visas?

No. International flights to and from the player’s country of origin, visa processing costs and any associated taxes, and legal costs once in Spain are all excluded from the program fee and are the family’s responsibility. The academy provides supporting documents for visa applications but is not responsible for the outcome of any visa application.

What language are classes taught in?

The primary language of academic instruction is English — all AESA Prep lessons are taught online in English. A French-language option is available within the AESA Prep system for French-speaking players. Players may also continue with their own home-country online curriculum in any language.

Will my child play in official Spanish youth league matches?

For programs of 6 months or 10 months: yes, once a local youth football licence is obtained. The licence process starts on arrival and typically takes around 2 months. During this period, friendly matches are organised. Once licensed, players compete in official Spanish youth league matches with CD Aurrerá de Vitoria — a local partner club that fields multiple teams per age group so each player is placed at an appropriate competitive level. For programs under 6 months (3 months, 1 month, weeks): only friendly matches are possible. An official licence cannot be obtained for shorter-duration stays.

What level of football experience is required?

There is no minimum competitive level required to join the program. Players are assessed on arrival and placed into the team within CD Aurrerá de Vitoria that best matches their current level. For example, at the cadete (U16) level there are multiple teams of different standards, all competing under different names in the same youth leagues. Oxasport recommends sharing your child’s playing background — club history, current level, and position — with us before applying, so we can discuss realistic expectations honestly.

Is there 24/7 supervision for players?

Yes. Ondare Residencia provides 24-hour coverage. A designated person of the academy residence serves as the welfare contact and the family’s named point of contact throughout the player’s stay. Health insurance is included for all players.

What academic qualification will my child work toward?

For players under 18, the primary academic pathway is AESA Prep — an American online preparatory school system taught in English, which leads toward a US high school qualification. For players aged 18 and over, a university-level option is available (confirm specific institution with the club). Players who prefer to continue with their own home-country online curriculum can do so instead of AESA Prep.
